Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain, was born in Missouri. When he was only 12 he got a job at the Hannibal Courier. He fulfilled his dream of piloting steamboats in his early 20s but the Civil War halted most river traffic. Clemens had a short enlistment in the Confederate Army before moving west to find fame and fortune. His narrative style made him a great storyteller, climaxing with ‟Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog.” He started a publishing house, which marketed the hugely successful memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant. Grant was nearly bankrupt when he died, and the book saved his family. Clemens was one of the best-known Americans in the late 19th century and received many honors. He never achieved the great wealth he longed for. In 1895 he made a round-the-world lecture tour to help pay down his debts.
Ernest Hemingway once wrote that ‟All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn.”
‟It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”
‟Religion was invented when the first con man met the first fool.”
