Description
On August 21, 1861, James Ray and his younger brother Samuel Ray enlisted in Company F, New Jersey 5th Infantry Regiment. On Sept 7, 1864, they mustered out in Trenton, New Jersey. Samuel and James both rose to the rank of Corporal. During their 3 years of service, the 5th N.J. Regiment was engaged in many battles. At Gettysburg, the regiment had 188 men engaged in the battle, with losses of 18 killed, 60 wounded and 16 missing, that being one-half of the numbers engaged. After the war, James married Rebecca Sanderlin and had 7 children, Capitola, Sarah, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Zacheous, James, and Clarence. In 1860, his occupation was listed as a sailor. He lived at times in Salem and Quinton, New Jersey, and is buried in Alloway along with his younger brother Samuel.
5th New Jersey Infantry Regiment
Civil War engagements of the 5th New Jersey Infantry Regiment include the Siege of Yorktown and Battles of Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Savage’s Station, Glendale, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Manassas Gap, McLean’s Ford, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, Deep Bottom, the Crater (mine explosion), Fort Sedgwick, Peeble’s Farm, and the Battle of Boydton Plank Road. In November 1864, the 5th Regiment was consolidated with the 7th Regiment. New Jersey Volunteers.
