Description
Doctor Samuel Mudd was a tobacco grower and slave owner who believed slavery was divinely ordained. He was also a physician. When Maryland abolished slavery in 1864 he considered selling his farm and was introduced to John Wilkes Booth as a potential buyer. Mudd also met John Surratt when he was in Washington to discuss selling his farm to Booth. There is controversy over whether Mudd knew of Booth’s plan to kill Lincoln, or whether Booth’s stopping at Mudd’s home during his escape after the assassination was a coincidence because he was injured and needed medical assistance. Mudd was convicted and imprisoned for aiding and conspiring with Booth and sent to prison. President Johnson pardoned him in 1869, but his conviction was never overturned.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
