John Tidball was brevetted five times for gallantry during the Civil War.  He served as part of the U.S. Horse Artillery Brigade from its inception in 1861.  He fought in most of the campaigns in the Eastern Theater, including Bull Run and the Siege of Petersburg.  He commanded the artillery of the 11th Corps during the Overland Campaign and at the Battle of the Wilderness.  After the Battle of Antietam, John Tidball wrote that his battery had been exceedingly fortunate in having only one private killed, three wounded and ten horses killed.  He added that having shot off 1,200 rounds proved one could maneuver and fire a horse battery with matchless dexterity.  John Tidball won his second brevet to lieutenant colonel for his actions.

This John C. Tidball mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
