Harriet Tubman was born into slavery and given the slave name Araminta Ross. The birth year above is approximate. Her maternal grandmother came to the U.S. on a slave ship. In 1849 Harriet escaped to Philadelphia, saved money and made around 19 missions south to rescue about 300 enslaved families and friends over a period of 10 years. She was nicknamed ‟Moses” by William Lloyd Garrison and ‟General Tubman” by John Brown, whom she helped recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry. During the Civil War she worked for the Union Army as a cook, nurse and later as an armed scout and spy. In 1863 she became the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, during the Combahee River Raid. After the war she worked for women’s suffrage.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
