Description

Ulysses S. Grant graduated from West Point and served in the Mexican-American War.  Early in the Civil War, Grant defeated the Confederate armies in the West. Lincoln promoted him to lieutenant general and commander of all Union armies.  Grant confronted Lee in a series of bloody battles in 1864 and coordinated devastating campaigns, along with William Tecumseh Sherman and Philip Sheridan.  Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox in 1865.  After the war Grant served two terms as president and worked to stabilize the South during Reconstruction.  He enforced civil rights laws and fought the Ku Klux Klan.  In 1880, he made a bid for a third term as president but lost.

This Ulysses S. Grant mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
