Description
Nicknamed “Old Fuss and Feathers,” Winfield Scott served on active duty for 53 years, longer than any other man in American history. Scott was a huge man, standing at 6-foot-5. He commanded forces in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War and was briefly the Commander General during the Civil War. He was so popular after the Mexican-American War that in 1852, the Whig Party passed over its own incumbent president, Millard Fillmore, to nominate Scott. He lost to Democrat Franklin Pierce, but Scott was such a popular national figure that he was promoted to lieutenant general, the first to hold that rank since George Washington.
This Winfield Scott mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
