Peter Welch was born in 1947. He worked with low-income people in Chicago in the late 1960s. He served in the Vermont Senate from 1981-1989 and was the Vermont Senate’s president pro tempore from 1985-1989, the first Democrat to ever hold that position. He left politics to practice law from 1989-2001 when he was appointed to fill a vacancy in the Vermont Senate. In 2006, Welch made a successful run for the U.S. House of Representatives, winning the election to succeed Bernie Sanders who was elected to the U.S. Senate. In 2022, Peter Welch was elected to the U.S. Senate, filling the position previously held by retiring Senator Pat Leahy. Welch opposed the War in Iraq before it even began, but has shown strong support to military veterans. In 2016 and 2020, Welch endorsed Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination for U.S. President.
The House of Representatives and Senate comprise the legislative branch of the U.S. government. Representatives, elected from congressional districts, are allocated to states based on population measured by the U.S. Census. The number of Representatives is set by law at 435. The House is charged with the passage of federal legislation, known as bills, which after concurrence by the Senate, are sent to the president for consideration. The House has the power to initiate all bills related to revenue and the impeachment of federal officers.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
