U.S. President Gerald Rudolph Ford is the only president to have served as both vice president and president without having been elected by the electoral college. Gerald Ford was appointed as vice president when Spiro Agnew resigned and became president when Richard Nixon resigned. He served the shortest time, 895 days, of any president who did not die in office. After only nine months in office, North Vietnam conquered South Vietnam, ending U.S. involvement in the region. Ford presided over the worst economy since the Great Depression. One of his most controversial acts was to grant a presidential pardon to Richard Nixon for his role in the Watergate scandal. He lost his bid to be elected president in 1976 to Democrat Jimmy Carter.
There are three separate branches of government in the United States; the legislative, executive, and judicial. The president is the head of the executive branch, the elected head of state, and the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces. The executive branch is responsible for executing and enforcing federal law and appointing heads of all executive agencies and federal commissions. The president is responsible for promoting diplomacy with other nations, issuing executive orders, and signing pardons and international treaties. When legislation is passed in Congress, the president has the power to sign or veto bills. The Constitution states that the president must be a natural-born citizen of the U.S., at least 35 years old, and have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years. Elections are held every four years and the president is limited to two, four-year terms.
