Description

Archibald Grimké was born into slavery but moved north after the Civil War.  His two aunts paid for his tuition to Harvard Law School where he was the second African American to graduate.  Grimké began his law practice and career as an author and civil rights spokesman in Boston.  He worked with Frederick Douglass, W.E.B.  Du Bois and Booker T. Washington to create institutions that promoted education and opportunities for blacks.  He served as American Consul to the Dominican Republic from 1894 – 1898.  Grimké was a co-founder of the NAACP and became the national vice president.  He never stopped fighting against racial discrimination and segregation, writing letters and testifying before Congress.

The mission of the African American Civil War Museum is to tell the stories of the United States Colored Troops who fought for freedom during the American Civil War.  The museum is situated in the Grimké Building located in the historic “U” Street neighborhood.  The Spirit of Freedom: African American Civil War Memorial sculpture incorporates a Wall of Honor that includes the names of the 209,145 U.S. Colored Troops who served during the war.

This Archibald Grimké history mug is part of our African American History series which includes many of the unique individuals who played an important part in molding America’s history.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
