Description

Rosa Parks lived on the farm of her grandfather, Sylvester Edwards, who was a former slave.  She recounts an experience of her grandfather standing on their front porch holding a shotgun as the K.K.K. marched down the street.  In 1943 Rosa became an active member of the N.A.A.C.P serving as a youth leader, and until 1957, as secretary to E.D. Nixon, the president of the N.A.A.C.P.  She left her job as a seamstress and was riding on the bus when she refused to give up her seat to a white man.  Rosa moved to Detroit after the boycott, worked for U.S.  Congressman John Conyers, and served on the board of Planned Parenthood.

Montgomery Bus Boycott

In 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested after refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on the Cleveland Avenue bus.  This resulted in the formation of the Montgomery Improvement Association, which elected Martin Luther King as its leader.  The bus boycott was initiated and lasted 381 days, during which time, blacks organized carpools or walked long distances rather than ride buses.  The case was taken to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled bus segregation laws were unconstitutional.

This Rosa Parks History Mug is part of our biographical Civil Rights series which includes many unique individuals who played an important part in molding our U.S. history.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
