Description
Harriet Beecher Stowe was the author of the 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Her depiction of life as a slave for African Americans was read by millions of people in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom. The book and play influenced the view of many people regarding slavery. In the South it provoked widespread anger, but it energized Northern antislavery forces. In 1836 Harriet married Calvin Ellis Stowe, a professor and critic of slavery. The couple were part of the underground railroad, housing runaway slaves in their home. In 1850 the Fugitive Slave Law prohibited assistance to fugitive slaves. Harriet Beecher Stowe met President Lincoln in 1862, and it was later reported that he said, “so you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.”
This Harriet Beecher Stowe mug is part of our US Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
