Description
Abner Doubleday graduated from West Point, and as an Army officer served in the Mexican-American, Seminole, American Civil, and American Indian wars. At the start of the Civil War, Doubleday fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter. He saw action in many campaigns but his finest performance was at Gettysburg, where he took command after the death of General John Reynolds. His corps held off overwhelming Confederate forces before retreating to Cemetery Hill, thus preserving the high ground for the Union forces. His corps suffered nearly 50 percent casualties. After the war, while stationed in San Francisco, he obtained a patent for the cable car railway that is still in operation. He authored two books on the Civil War.
This Abner Doubleday mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
